The Dogs of NextSpace

By Cat Johnson on Jun. 15, 2016

One of the things that makes NextSpace great is that, along with our awesome humans, we have lots of furry friends that work alongside us, attend happy hours, and help keep the spaces fun and friendly. Here is but a small sampling of the dogs of NextSpace.

Dog: Porter of NextSpace Santa Cruz
Human: Chris Miller of Launch Brigade

Porter

1. What is Porter’s favorite thing to do at NextSpace?

Happy hour. Porter knows he's supposed to stay in the office, but he knows when happy hour happens (even though he's mostly deaf at this point), and he "jailbreaks" to come out and socialize, and clean up food that people drop.

2. What's his favorite work/sleep/hang out spot?

In everyone's way, usually on someone's feet under their desk.

3. Would Porter rather get out and be social or find a quiet spot to spend the day?

Porter would prefer to wander the space, but he knows that is against the rules, so he mostly chills out on his dog bed or people’s feet. He has gone to work with me most of his life from when he was a puppy. I believe this was significant in socializing him and part of the reason he's so chill since he's rarely left out. Dog is my co-pilot.

4. Any advice Porter can offer other dogs considering coming to NextSpace?

Welcome others with open arms, err, paws.

5. Any advice he can offer dog owners about making the coworking experience great for their dogs?

Buy a dog bed and bowls for the office, and a container to keep water in for convenient refills. Carry spare rolls of poop bags in your car, backpack, office. Take a break and walk your dog, you both need it. Introduce your dog to others sooner rather than later so there will be less chance for conflict. Teach your dog a "no barking" command.

6. Anything you'd like to add?

Dogs make the workplace better, and it's much better for them than sitting at home waiting to spend time with you.

Dog: Frodo Stinson of the Canals of NextSpace Venice Beach

Human: Jenny Stinson of SPASIGMA

Frodo

1. What is Frodo’s favorite thing to do at NextSpace?

Pretty sure it's playing with all the other NextSpace dogs. He hears a jingle of a collar he runs to the door to see who it is.

2. What's his favorite work/sleep/hang out spot?

Right on the floor...next to the crate he should be sleeping in.

3. Would Frodo rather get out and be social or find a quiet spot to spend the day? Why?

Both! It's all about balance right?

4. Any advice Frodo can offer other dogs considering coming to NextSpace?

Just asked him...and he couldn't think of anything in particular except make sure to bring a lot of chew toys if you're a puppy....because the carpet at times can be very very tempting.

5. Any advice Frodo can offer dog owners about making the coworking experience great for their dogs?

Since all dogs must be vaccinated, I feel pretty safe. And, of the dogs at my spot, everyone is well trained so not only do I feel safe, I'm learning as well!

6. Anything you'd like to add?

Coming to work with my dog is a new experience for me. In stressful times for me or my coworkers, a puppy/dog kiss can be a great stress reliever. They are such a great reminder to stop and give yourself a break and a breather.

Dog: Merlin of NextSpace Venice Beach

Human: Matt Florin

Merlin

1. What is Merlin’s favorite thing to do at NextSpace?

Sit on my lap and sleep. He’s 16 years old.

2. What's Merlin’s favorite work/sleep/hang out spot?

My lap or his ratty doggy bed, curled up in a ball, with an even rattier blanket that he loves to death.

3. Would Merlin rather get out and be social or find a quiet spot to spend the day? Why?

Being in his golden years, Merlin likes being social and he defines that as slowly staggering over to someone and plopping his body down wedged next to them, siphoning off the heat from his warm-bodied neighbor.

4. Any advice he can offer other dogs considering coming to NextSpace?

Pace yourself, life is a marathon not a sprint.

5. Any advice Merlin can offer dog owners about making the coworking experience great for their dogs?

Dog treats and potential breakout space to let loose.

6. Anything you'd like to add?

Merlin would like to thank the academy.

Dog: Ella of NextSpace Berkeley

Human: Beth Waitkus of the Insight Garden Program

Elle

1. What is Ella’s favorite thing to do at NextSpace?

Sleep and vacuum up leftovers on the floor. Play with her “Gator” (her green stuffed alligator).

2. What's her favorite work/sleep/hang out spot?

Our office, right next to her mama.

3. Would Ella rather get out and be social or find a quiet spot to spend the day? Why?

Find a quiet spot. She likes some dogs, but mostly people who are willing to throw “Gator."

4. Any advice Ella can offer other dogs considering coming to NextSpace?

It’s a great place to have a dog!

5. Any advice she can offer dog owners about making the coworking experience great for their dogs?

Just to have them under voice control, and manageable.

6. Anything you'd like to add?

I’m very grateful to NextSpace for allowing us to have our furry friends. Everyone benefits — especially the dogs who don’t have to stay home all day by their lonesome selves!

Dog: Zimo of NextSpace Santa Cruz

Human: Jo-Ann Birch of Fair Measures Inc.

Zimo

1. What is Zimo’s favorite thing to do at NextSpace?

Zimo likes to sleep and get petted by NextSpace members

2. What is Zimo’s favorite work/sleep/hang out spot?

She sleeps on a sleeping pad in my office.

3. Would Zimo rather get out and be social or find a quiet spot to spend the day?

She likes to be in my office. I’m not sure how she would be with other dogs in a common space.

4. Any advice Zimo can offer other dogs considering coming to NextSpace?

She likes to go for walks along the river levy, so I would say make sure your dog gets out once or twice a day. And be prepared to have NextSpace members love your dog up.

5. Any advice she can offer dog owners about making the coworking experience great for their dogs?

Walks and water.

Dog: LAIKA of NextSpace Berkeley

Human: Julianne Diaz of Magceutics

Laika

1. What is your dog's favorite thing to do at NextSpace?

Investigate. Investigate this, investigate that, general investigation. (I doubt anyone will get this reference, lol.)

2. What's Laika’s favorite work/sleep/hang out spot?

The Vault. The company in there bought some organic dog treats just for Laika so she visits frequently to have a snack.

3. Would Laika rather get out and be social or find a quiet spot to spend the day? Why?

Laika is a social butterfly. She’s a working dog, so when she visits NextSpace she is constantly doing her rounds to check on everyone and ensure the office is secure. She’ll even patrol upstairs on her own.

4. Any advice Laika can offer other dogs considering coming to NextSpace?

If you give the googly eyes to Danny, she’ll feed you treats all day. She’s easy.

5. Any advice she can offer dog owners about making the coworking experience great for their dogs?

Bring toys.

6. Anything you'd like to add?

Laika is a huge Warriors fan.
