You have so many stories inside of you, and you are burning to tell them. But how do you get from inspiration to publication? In this two-day class, veteran journalist Taffy Brodesser-Akner will take you through the paces of the freelance life. You’ll learn how to pitch to editors, keep your pile of ideas fresh, and work with your sources. In the first session, Taffy will cover the mechanics of being a professional freelancer: how much to charge, time management, where to pitch your ideas, and how to avoid the rookie mistakes. The second class will be devoted to workshopping at least one of your ideas, discussing which publications to target and how to approach them. By the end of the class, you’ll have everything you need to set up a writing practice focused entirely on freelancing writing. It won’t be long before you’re sipping a cup of hot coffee and typing up your next great article for the New York Times. You can see fourteen essays by Taffy’s students here (Beauty Bean, Boston Globe, Dad’s Divorce, LA Times, Salon #1, Salon #2, Salon #3, Salon #4, Salon #5, Salon #6, Salon #7, Salon #8, Spirit Magazine, Xojane)–with Taffy’s help, they got published and paid for their work!
